St. George "Go Green"
Initiative
March 1, 2009
Many
of you have heard the phrase "Go Green" by now.
Simply put, it is a way of living your life in a more
sustainable manner. Being "green" can involve activities
such as recycling paper, metals, and glass items, and
replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact
fluorescent light bulbs. It can also involve
simple changes in your daily habits such as adjusting
the thermostat lower in the winter and higher in the
summer, turning off the lights when leaving a room,
unplugging appliances when not in use, using cold water
to wash clothes when possible, and taking shorter
showers. In today's economy being "green" is not
only for the environmentally conscious, it is also a way
of saving "green". Many of the "green" websites offer
tips on how to become more sustainable and save money
while doing it. We at St. George would like to
implement some of these ideas beginning with the
Orthodox Light. In order to save on printing and
mailing costs we are asking our parishioners to receive
the Orthodox Light electronically. If you choose
to do so you will receive and email from the church
notifying you that the current issue has been posted on
our website. The issue is posted in pdf format so it can
be read on line or downloaded onto your computer.
The March-April 2009 issue has a
form on the back that can be filled out and handed in to
the church office if you would like to receive the
Orthodox Life and church correspondence electronically.
You can also email the church at
church@stgeorgeclifton.org with the subject line "GO
GREEN" and the body of the email containing your name,
address, phone number(s), and the email addresses you
would like the notifications sent to. Your
personal information will be used to cross check against
the current mailing list. All of the information
collected will be kept confidential.
Other sustainable steps we are
looking at implementing in the church are replacing old
light bulbs with more energy efficient bulbs,
replacing the old roof-top mechanical equipment with
energy efficient units, and starting a recycling
program. We welcome your comments and
suggestions regarding this initiative. Every
little bit will help. |
